Artist's bio: Scholar and artist David Driskell is regarded as one of the world's leading authorities on African American art. Born at Eatonton, Georgia in 1931, he was educated in North Carolina's public schools and earned his undergraduate degree at Howard University; he received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Catholic University in Washington, DC, and pursued post-graduate studies in art history at the Netherlands Institute for the History of Art. Driskell has contributed significantly to the study of the role of African American artists in society. He has authored five books, co-authored four others, and published more than forty catalogs. He has lectured extensively around the world. In 1998 the University of Maryland established the Driskell Center for the Study of the African Diaspora, honoring his forty-four years as an artist, educator, philanthropist, collector, and historian.
