Donated to the State Black Archives Research Center & Museum by Velma A. Walker. Artist's bio: Romare Bearden (September 2, 1911 - 2013 March 12, 1988) was an artist and writer born in Charlotte, NC. He grew up in Harlem as a member of the educated middle-class. His mother was the New York correspondent for the Chicago Defender. Bearden completed his studies at New York University with a degree in education. His education was interrupted by stints as a professional baseball player. He was offered an opportunity to play professional baseball for the then Philadelphia Athletics if he would agree to pass for white - an offer he refused. He studied at the Art Student's league of New York under the German artist, George Grosz. Digitized by J.F. Drake Memorial LRC; Alabama A&M University. |
