Donated to the State Black Archives Research Center & Museum by Velma A. Walker. Artist's bio: Black Joe Jackson was born circa 1920 near Atlanta, Georgia to a sharecropper's family. He was named for the baseball player "Shoeless Joe" Jackson and nicknamed by his friends "Black" because he was considered too dark skinned to sing in his church choir. As an older teenager he played in a black bare hand baseball league. He served in World War II and discovered he could paint while recovering from an injury. After the war he worked at odd jobs until he took up painting again after retiring. His paintings are of everyday events, usually with his subjects depicted in bright colors. His backgrounds are soft, almost dreamlike. His pieces are easily identified by his bold titles and large signature. Digitized by J.F. Drake Memorial LRC; Alabama A&M University. |
