Walker., Artist's bio: Benny Andrews (November 13, 1930 - 2013 November 10, 2006), a nationally recognized artist, teacher, author, and advocate of the arts, was born in Plainfield, GA. His mother, Viola, instilled in her ten children the importance of education, religion, and freedom of expression; his father, George, a self-taught artist, fueled their creativity with his drawings and illustrations. Andrews received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Chicago Institute in 1958. He served as Director of the Visual Art Program at the National Endowment for the Arts. He was also a writer and critic who taught at Queens College in NYC. Andrews explored American life in his collages, prints, paintings, and drawings by fusing memory and imagination. His work is part of the permanent collections of: the Museum of Modern Art; the Brooklyn Museum; the Detroit Institute of Art; the High Museum of Art in Atlanta; and the Museum of African Art in Washington DC., Digitized by J.F. Drake Memorial LRC; Alabama A&M University.
