Donated to the State Black Archives Research Center & Museum by Velma A. Walker. Artist's bio: Celebrated as one of the most important landscape artists of his generation, Richard Mayhew's works have revolutionized the depiction of the American landscape by capturing the experience rather than the literal appearance of the subject. His lush palette allows the viewer to explore the location through Mayhew's senses, and his interest in land issues has been fueled in part by his Native American and African American descent and the two cultures' shared reverence for nature. Born in Amityville, New York, Mayhew formally studied at the Brooklyn Museum Art School, the Art Student's League, Columbia University, and the Academia in Florence, Italy. He has held positions with the College Art Association, the National Academy of Design, and Penn State University. He is represented in major collections throughout the US, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York University, the Brooklyn Museum, and the National Museum of African Art. Digitized by J.F. Drake Memorial LRC; Alabama A&M University. |
